Home Recording Foundations

This unit introduces core concepts and hands‑on skills for building and operating a home recording studio, including signal flow, microphones, recording techniques, basic DAW/MIDI workflows, editing, and foundational mixing/export considerations. Students will practice setting up hardware and software, capturing multitrack performances, and preparing deliverables while developing a simple plan to promote their work, preparing them for advanced mixing, mastering, and production units.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze common home studio components and signal flow by diagramming hardware, analog and digital connections, mixers, and routing to justify an appropriate basic studio configuration.
• Apply microphone selection and placement techniques, set optimal signal levels, and execute a multitrack recording session including punching in/out to capture lead and backing vocal takes.
• Demonstrate foundational DAW and MIDI skills by synchronizing devices, creating and sequencing MIDI/audio tracks, using loops and basic digital editing tools to produce an edited rough mix.
• Evaluate mixing and delivery options by applying basic EQ, dynamics, effects routing, automation and file format choices, and produce a short documentation/marketing plan outlining next steps for mastering and promotion.
