Medical School Application Strategies

This unit guides students through selecting appropriate medical schools and completing the application cycle: primary applications, letters of recommendation, secondary applications, interviews, and responding to admissions decisions. It builds on prior preparation (academic record and personal narrative work) and readies students for next steps (financing, final decision-making, and matriculation planning).

Learning Objectives

• Analyze and compare at least five medical schools using criteria such as mission, curriculum type, clinical opportunities, geographic and financial considerations, and historical admission metrics to create a prioritized school list
• Apply best-practice strategies to produce a complete primary application package (including a personal statement draft, activity descriptions, and AMCAS/AACOMAS/TMDSAS sections) and submit a polished full draft for peer and instructor review
• Evaluate the role and quality of letters of recommendation and secondary applications by developing a recommendation request plan, creating templates for letter solicitations, and completing at least two timed secondary essay responses
• Demonstrate effective interview and post-interview communication skills by performing mock interviews with competency-based answers, formulating individualized questions for interviewers, and drafting response plans for outcomes (acceptance, waitlist, rejection)
