This unit examines thirty case studies from ancient monuments through modern high‑rises to explore how culture, technology, materials, and structural systems shape architectural form and performance. Students analyze successes, failures, and controversies—including seismic resilience, collapses, and professional ethics—to synthesize lessons for contemporary architectural practice.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze key architectural case studies from antiquity to the modern era (for example, the Parthenon, Pantheon, Chartres, Villa Savoye, Seagram Building, Petronas Towers, and World Trade Towers) to identify how cultural context, style, and programmatic requirements influenced form and function.
• Apply principles of materials, structural systems, and building performance (including seismic and wind considerations) to assess why specific buildings survived or failed and produce annotated diagrams and written assessments supporting those conclusions.
• Evaluate the evolution of high‑rise design strategies and technological innovations (such as tube framing, curtain walls, and high‑tech systems) by comparing representative skyscraper case studies for aesthetic, functional, and engineering trade-offs.
• Demonstrate understanding of professional and ethical issues in architecture—including attribution, inclusion of underrepresented practitioners, preservation, and response to catastrophic loss—by preparing a reflective critique with recommendations for contemporary practice.
