Statistical Programming and Visualization in R

This unit advances students’ R skills by combining programming constructs (functions, control flow, data structures) with tidyverse workflows to import, summarize, and visualize data. It emphasizes applied inferential statistics (t-tests, variance and chi-square tests), interactive graphics, and reproducible project work to prepare students for real-world data analyses.

Learning Objectives

• Apply R programming constructs (user-defined functions, for loops, if statements) and tidyverse tools to import, clean, and summarize data frames for analysis
• Analyze datasets by computing descriptive statistics (median, mode, variance) and conducting inferential tests in R, including one-sample and two-sample t-tests, variance tests, and chi-square tests
• Demonstrate proficiency creating and interacting with visualizations (base and ggplot2/tidyverse), including plots of t- and chi-square distributions and exploratory graphics that support statistical interpretation
• Evaluate and communicate reproducible analyses by documenting code with comments, exporting results, and completing applied projects that synthesize programming and statistical findings
