Human Adaptive Systems and Physiology

This unit explores human physiological adaptations and integrated systems that support survival, behavior, and clinical function — including immunity, the microbiome, gas transport, respiration, sensory processing, and evolutionary anatomical traits. Students build on prior anatomy foundations to synthesize how these systems interact and prepare for advanced clinical and health-science applications.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze innate and adaptive immune mechanisms and the contributions of human milk and commensal microbiota to neonatal and lifelong immunity using case-based evidence
• Apply principles of respiratory mechanics, voluntary breathing control, oxygen toxicity, and hemoglobin oxygen transport to interpret clinical scenarios and predict physiological outcomes under hypoxic or hyperoxic conditions
• Demonstrate how olfactory, visual, and limbic pathways process emotion and fear and influence behavior by explaining neural circuitry and designing simple observational or experimental assessments
• Evaluate human evolutionary anatomical adaptations—such as opposable thumbs, reduced body hair, and specialized oral structures—and assess their functional and clinical implications for movement, feeding, and patient care
