Intermediate Java: Algorithms & APIs

This unit advances core Java skills by covering intermediate data structures, common algorithms, runtime tooling, and API usage. Students will work with generics, collections, sorting/searching, basic concurrency, JavaFX UI fundamentals, input validation, and standard libraries for I/O, date-time, and numeric precision to prepare for application-level development.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze and compare algorithmic approaches (e.g., quicksort, linear search) and data structures (e.g., arrays, HashMap, observable lists) by measuring and justifying performance trade-offs for given problems.
• Apply object-oriented and generic programming principles to design, implement, and document Java classes—creating generic types, using inheritance and interfaces, overriding methods, and employing getters/setters, static members, equals, and anonymous inner classes.
• Demonstrate proficiency with the Java development runtime and tools by compiling and running programs from the command line, managing Java versions, handling exceptions, creating threads, and using functional interfaces.
• Develop and validate simple user-facing and I/O features using JavaFX (scenes, layouts, event handling, input validation), file/directory displays, regular expressions, HTTP basics, Date-Time APIs, and BigDecimal for numeric precision.
