Building and Debugging Web Apps

This unit expands students’ practical web development skills by combining HTML/CSS markup and styling with introductory scripting, debugging, and project planning. Learners will dissect an existing app, break goals into implementable tasks, build and style pages and forms, and practice debugging and tooling research to prepare for the culminating project.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze a simple web application’s requirements (e.g., McDuck’s Offer App) and produce a written, step-by-step implementation plan that breaks the project into prioritized, testable tasks.
• Apply HTML and CSS to construct and style pages that include semantic tags, tables, and forms, demonstrating correct structure and responsive layout across at least two screen sizes.
• Demonstrate proficiency with basic scripting by writing and executing common Ruby and Python commands and using debugging techniques to locate and fix syntax, runtime, and logic errors documented in a debug log.
• Evaluate developer and community resources (news sites, libraries, tools) to select appropriate technologies and produce a project plan plus a guided walkthrough of an existing web app’s structure and workflow.
