Foundations of Security Awareness Programs

This unit introduces the core principles and practical building blocks of an organizational security awareness program, including benefits, business justification, components, culture, stakeholders, budgeting, logistics, and communications. Students will learn to translate compliance and business drivers into a basic program outline and stakeholder engagement plan that prepares them for deeper implementation and measurement in subsequent units.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze an organization’s culture and subcultures to identify at least three barriers and three enablers that will affect security awareness adoption and recommend two adaptation strategies for each identified subculture
• Apply business drivers and compliance requirements to prioritize awareness topics and justify the inclusion of phishing simulations and gamification elements in a foundational awareness plan
• Design a foundational security awareness program outline that specifies program components, designated roles (e.g., ambassadors, champion, executive sponsor), logistics, two types of communications tools, and high‑level budget estimates
• Evaluate resource and stakeholder needs by preparing a one‑to‑two page business case that includes cost considerations, ROI rationale, and tailored questions for CISO, HR, Legal, Communications, and Physical Security
