This unit develops intermediate operational and regulatory skills required for safe, compliant drone missions. Students will work with airspace classifications and authorizations, Part 107 and Remote ID requirements, night and weather-limited operations, preflight and maintenance procedures, crew resource management, troubleshooting, and post-flight documentation in preparation for advanced mission planning.
Learning Objectives
- Analyze airspace classifications, special-use areas, and authorization/waiver requirements and determine applicable Part 107, Remote Identification, and accident-reporting obligations for mission planning
- Apply preflight and maintenance protocols, including drone calibration, LiPo battery handling, logging procedures, and selection of warranties/insurance to maintain airworthiness and operational readiness
- Demonstrate safe flight operations using crew resource management, twilight/night best practices, recognition and mitigation of night visual illusions, execution of built-in maneuvers and active tracking while maintaining appropriate visual line of sight
- Evaluate and troubleshoot technical systems and mission-support tools — including B4UFLY/airspace apps, RC connectivity, crash-safety features, and post-flight media/data handling — and document corrective actions
