Robot Assembly, Coding, and Testing

This unit guides students through integrating hardware and software to build a working robot: organizing parts, step-by-step assembly, installing controllers and expansion boards, and adding basic sensors and accessories. Students will learn to use the Basic Stamp Editor, write and reuse code snippets and subroutines (including light-sensor interpretation), run built-in programs, and perform systematic testing and troubleshooting to prepare for more advanced behaviors in later units.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze robot components and prepare parts and workspace by identifying functions, organizing materials, and planning a safe, efficient assembly sequence
• Apply step-by-step assembly procedures to mount drive motors, wheels, controllers, whiskers, expansion boards, and basic sensors to construct a functional robot chassis
• Demonstrate proficiency with the Basic Stamp Editor and programming fundamentals by running built-in programs, implementing code snippets and subroutines, and writing software that interprets light-sensor hardware
• Evaluate and troubleshoot hardware and software problems by testing power systems, diagnosing wiring and sensor issues, debugging code, and documenting corrective actions to ensure reliable robot operation
