Foundations of Geographic Information Systems

This unit establishes core GIS concepts, data models, measurement methods, and introductory cartographic and computational tools that underpin geospatial work. Students will gain practical experience with raster and vector data, basic analysis (distance, area, viewsheds, connectivity), map design, and common GIS platforms to prepare for more advanced modeling and application in subsequent units.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze and compare raster and vector spatial data models by distinguishing their structures, advantages, limitations, and appropriate use cases across at least three real-world mapping scenarios
• Apply cartographic principles and symbology in ArcGIS Pro and OpenStreetMap to produce a print-ready map and a web-map prototype that communicate spatial patterns clearly
• Demonstrate spatial measurement and basic analysis skills by calculating absolute distances, areas, viewsheds, and connectivity metrics using GIS tools and interpreting the results for decision-making
• Evaluate attribute and metadata quality, identify common data errors, and justify dataset selection for a GIS project while considering organizational impacts and the potential integration of AI/ML methods
