Foundations of Music Theory

This unit introduces core music theory concepts—notation, rhythm, meter, pitch, basic harmony, and historical foundations—so students can read, write, and hear fundamental musical elements. It establishes essential skills and vocabulary required for later units in the pathway and prepares students for more advanced harmonic and analytical study.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze the historical and conceptual origins of Western music theory (e.g., Pythagoras, Gregorian chant, early blues) to explain how these developments influence modern notation and musical practice.
• Apply standard music notation to accurately read, write, and interpret staff positions, clefs, note values, rests (including dotted rests), simple time signatures, measures, and pickup notes.
• Demonstrate understanding of pitch relationships by constructing major-scale patterns, identifying key signatures via the circle of fifths, labeling melodic and harmonic intervals, and building triads and basic diatonic and chromatic chords.
• Evaluate and create rhythmic and timbral elements by notating and performing stress patterns, syncopation, tempo markings, basic counterpoint gestures, and by using chord charts or audio tracks to support a brief ensemble or solo presentation.
