Applied Composition and Production

This unit develops practical composition, arranging, and production skills needed to create multi-section works and media-ready music. Students will expand harmonic and textural techniques, work with instrument ranges and notation, use composition technology, and learn rights and licensing practices to prepare pieces for distribution and placement.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze chord progressions, voicings, independent voices, and phrase-level devices (passing tones, pivot notes, rhythmic variation) to justify harmonic and melodic decisions in a multi-section composition.
• Apply compositional forms, gestural shapes, and arrangement techniques to create coherent beginnings, middles, and transitions while writing for bass, guitar (tab and strumming), drums, transposing and non-transposing instruments.
• Demonstrate proficiency with composition and production tools—notation software, DAWs, tablature editors, transposition functions, and AI-assisted generators—to produce a notated score and audio mock-up suitable for media placement.
• Evaluate copyright, licensing, and distribution options (ownership, permissions, music libraries, and online platforms) and recommend appropriate strategies for releasing or licensing original compositions.
