Workplace Health and Safety Systems

Builds on foundational hazard recognition to focus on implementing and managing health and safety controls, policies, inspections, and communication in workplace settings. Students practice applying safety management system elements, conducting audits and risk assessments, and preparing strategies for regulatory compliance, employee welfare, and incident learning to prepare for advanced application in Unit 4.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze workplace hazard scenarios (e.g., ergonomics, chemicals, fire, asbestos, machinery, substance misuse) and recommend prioritized control measures using the hierarchy of controls.
• Apply elements of a recognized safety management system by creating inspection and audit checklists, drafting a statement of general policy, and specifying contracting and insurance requirements for contractor and vendor management.
• Demonstrate communication and training methods by producing sample incident reports, toolbox-talk plans, signage, and documentation templates that support employee welfare and regulatory compliance.
• Evaluate incident data, audit findings, and applicable regulations (including COSHH and PSM considerations) to identify root causes and propose corrective actions and continuous improvement measures.
