AI, Society, Policy, and Privacy

This unit examines how AI augments human capacity across health, agriculture, humanitarian action, and urban systems while addressing ethical, privacy, and policy implications. Students will explore evidence-based policymaking, community values, public–private partnerships, and regulatory frameworks (from GDPR to local policies) to design responsible, sustainability-focused AI solutions for smart cities and climate resilience.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze examples of AI augmentation in medicine, agriculture, humanitarian missions, and smart cities to identify human roles, benefits, and potential risks
• Evaluate privacy, security, and regulatory frameworks (e.g., GDPR and local policies) to recommend safeguards and compliance strategies for an AI-enabled organization
• Design a community-centered AI governance plan that defines values, stakeholder roles, public–private partnership strategies, and measurable goals for sustainability or climate action
• Apply evidence-based policymaking methods using AI-generated data to create a brief policy proposal that addresses a public-sector challenge (e.g., climate resilience, public health, or urban services)
