Ocean Stewardship and Species Interactions

This unit synthesizes species-level knowledge, ecosystem processes, and human dimensions to prepare learners for informed stewardship of marine environments. Students explore marine biodiversity, hazards and myths, ecosystem services (including bioprospecting and tourism), and apply conservation, policy, and civic actions to protect local and regional waters.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze the ecological roles, adaptations, and human-related hazards of representative marine taxa (e.g., snakes, jellies, fishes, birds, invertebrates) and distinguish scientific facts from common misconceptions presented in media and outreach materials
• Evaluate human impacts on coastal and open-ocean systems (including pollution, sea-level change, tourism, and resource exploitation) and assess the relative effectiveness of management, restoration, and policy responses at local and regional scales
• Apply safe handling protocols, watershed-protection practices, and consumer choices to reduce harm to marine life and demonstrate pollution-prevention techniques (e.g., using natural products, preventing drain pollution, responsible purchasing)
• Demonstrate civic and career readiness by developing and communicating a local conservation action plan or participation strategy (e.g., joining organizations, advocacy, sustainable tourism practices, or ethical bioprospecting) that integrates ecological, economic, and social considerations
