Integrated Environmental Management

This unit synthesizes policy, science, and justice-focused approaches to managing environmental challenges at local, national, and international scales. Students investigate treaties and regulations, assess pollution and climate impacts, and develop practical sustainability and equity-centered solutions using renewable energy, conservation, and management tools.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze major international and national environmental agreements and conventions and evaluate their effectiveness using case studies (e.g., Montreal Protocol, UNFCCC, BRS, CMS, World Heritage Convention, and U.S. environmental protections)
• Evaluate instances of environmental injustice and hazardous exposure (including environmental racism, hazardous waste sites, and unregulated logging) and propose evidence-based, equitable mitigation and policy responses
• Design an integrated sustainability plan that applies energy conservation, renewable technologies (e.g., wind, fuel cells), sustainable agriculture/aquaculture practices, and integrated pest management to meet measurable sustainability goals
• Apply scientific monitoring and data analysis methods to assess environmental change (e.g., climate trends, ocean gyres, dead zones, atmospheric composition, and groundwater issues) and recommend adaptive management actions
