Renovation Systems and Procurement

This unit develops the technical, regulatory, and procurement knowledge needed to move a residential self‑build or renovation from concept to a ready-to-construct package. Students compare construction systems, apply building regulations, produce costed contract documents, and select safety, energy and sustainability solutions that prepare the project for execution in the final unit.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze site, planning and building‑regulation requirements and develop a compliant scope of work and permit strategy for a residential self‑build or renovation
• Evaluate structural and building‑envelope systems (foundations, walls, roofs, stairs, retaining works) and select appropriate construction methods and materials based on performance, cost, and sustainability criteria
• Apply procurement and project‑management practices to prepare detailed estimates, schedules, contract documents, and a risk/quality mitigation plan for proceeding to construction
• Demonstrate selection and justification of building services, safety measures, energy‑efficiency upgrades, and eco‑finishes (heating/fuels, ventilation, insulation, alarms, telecoms) to meet occupant needs and regulatory standards
