Assemblies, Site, and Project Planning

This unit develops practical knowledge of residential construction assemblies (insulation, roofing, foundations, timber framing, airtightness) and the site operations that support them, plus essential building services and retrofit strategies. It also prepares students to plan and organise a small self-build or renovation project through procurement, budgeting, contractor engagement, and compliance considerations.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze common residential assemblies (insulation, pitched roofs, timber framing, foundations, airtightness) and site conditions to select appropriate construction methods and materials that meet thermal, acoustic, and structural performance criteria.
• Apply planning, conservation, and code-related requirements to refine room- and building-scale designs (kitchens, bathrooms, conservatories, conversions, accessory dwellings) for regulatory compliance and constructability.
• Demonstrate project preparation and procurement skills by producing a basic site organisation and procurement plan that includes sequencing, contractor roles, material sourcing, cost estimates, and required insurances/warranties.
• Evaluate alternative energy options, electrical and service connections, and retrofit strategies to recommend cost-effective solutions that balance sustainability, performance, and client budget constraints.
