Head, Neck, and Upper Limb Anatomy

This unit examines the anatomy and clinical relevance of the special senses of the head (vision, smell, taste, hearing), the cervical spine and posterior thorax, and the pectoral girdle through the distal upper limb (arm, forearm, wrist, and hand). It builds on foundational musculoskeletal and neuroanatomy concepts introduced earlier and prepares learners for applied clinical assessment and intervention in the final unit.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze the anatomical structures of the special senses (eye, olfactory apparatus, tongue, ear) and their cranial nerve and vascular relationships by interpreting images, models, and clinical scenarios
• Apply knowledge of cervical and back musculature, vertebral anatomy, and neurovascular pathways to identify origins, insertions, innervation, and primary actions and to predict functional deficits after common injuries
• Demonstrate standardized palpation, joint range-of-motion, and basic orthopedic special tests for the pectoral girdle, shoulder, elbow, forearm, wrist, and hand using models or peers with correct technique and documentation
• Evaluate clinical cases involving the upper limb (rotator cuff/shoulder instability, elbow tendinopathies, forearm compartment issues, wrist/hand nerve entrapments) to correlate anatomical findings with likely diagnoses and propose appropriate anatomy-based management steps
