Styling, Layout, and JavaScript Fundamentals

This unit expands on basic HTML to teach core CSS styling and layout techniques alongside foundational JavaScript programming and DOM interaction. Students will practice building responsive, accessible pages, author scripting to manipulate content and form inputs, and use tools for debugging, validation, and hosting to prepare sites for deployment.

Learning Objectives

• Apply CSS styling and layout techniques—including resets, absolute and relative measurement units, color, typography (size, line-height, line-length), backgrounds, padding, floats, Flexbox, Grid, and fluid layouts—to create responsive and visually consistent web pages
• Demonstrate JavaScript fundamentals by writing, organizing, and testing code that uses variables, literal data types, numeric and string expressions, control structures (if/else, multiple decisions), functions, arrays, dates/times, and JSON to manipulate the Document Object Model and interact with HTMLInputElement objects
• Analyze and debug HTML, CSS, and JavaScript using browser developer tools, CSS/HTML validation, commenting best practices, and stepwise debugging techniques to identify and fix presentation and behavior issues
• Evaluate web pages for accessibility, standards compliance, and deployment readiness—implementing accessible structure, semantic elements, media embedding, and selecting appropriate text editors and web hosting options
