Laptop Maintenance, Security, and Safety

This unit teaches students preventive maintenance, security, and safe-use practices for laptops and peripherals. Students learn power and battery management, antivirus and update routines, ergonomics, theft-prevention, file organization, and everyday care habits that sustain device reliability and user privacy.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze laptop power-management behaviors and battery characteristics to select appropriate power modes, respond to low-battery warnings, and recommend charging and battery-maintenance strategies.
• Apply security and privacy best practices by configuring and keeping antivirus software up-to-date, disabling unnecessary wireless radios, safely handling removable media and downloads, and implementing basic theft-prevention measures.
• Demonstrate routine system-care and maintenance tasks including properly shutting down Windows, installing updates, using peripherals (keyboard, mouse, headphones), organizing files, and performing minor hardware upkeep (temperature management, cable and ID labeling).
• Evaluate ergonomic and professional practices to recommend workstation posture adjustments, thermal mitigation, cable management, identification/return labeling, and ongoing learning resources that promote long-term device reliability and user well-being.
