PC Hardware, Peripherals and Maintenance

This unit teaches identification, configuration, and basic maintenance of PC and laptop components, common peripherals, storage media, power systems, and basic network connectivity. It builds on foundational concepts from Unit 1 and prepares students for advanced troubleshooting, system imaging, and network administration in later units.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze and identify internal components, memory types, expansion slots, ports, and common peripherals (monitor, pointing devices, printers, scanners, removable and external storage) by labeling diagrams and explaining each item’s function and compatibility requirements.
• Demonstrate proper setup and configuration of displays, pointing devices, printers/scanners, removable media, and wired/wireless network connections, including cloud sync and internet access, using appropriate system settings and connection tools.
• Apply routine maintenance and troubleshooting procedures for power management, shutdown/restore operations, battery care, external storage, display brightness, and basic network troubleshooting to diagnose and resolve common PC and laptop problems.
• Evaluate security and data-protection risks (malware, phishing/bogus websites, device theft, unsafe removable media) and implement basic mitigations such as antivirus practices, secure settings, backups/restore strategies, and theft-reduction measures.
