Foundations of Recreational Sailing

This unit introduces beginner sailors to core knowledge and safe practices for small craft sailing, including equipment, basic boat anatomy, seamanship skills, wind and weather assessment, knots, anchoring, and emergency responses. It establishes foundational decision‑making and hands‑on procedures that prepare students for more advanced boat handling, navigation, and sailing performance units that follow.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze personal goals, intended uses, and available learning resources to select an appropriate beginner boat type and develop a basic training and equipment plan
• Demonstrate pre‑departure and onboard safety procedures by selecting and fitting life jackets, tying an overhand knot, preparing a family crew, and describing capsize recovery and swim‑to‑boat techniques
• Apply fundamental seamanship and boat‑handling skills by identifying sailboat parts and points of sail, executing safe departures and returns to a dock or mooring, deploying and retrieving a basic anchor, and responding to running aground
• Evaluate environmental and navigation information by determining wind direction and strength (including apparent wind), interpreting telltales and aids to navigation (buoys), assessing weather for go/no‑go decisions, and adjusting sail trim for safety and speed
