Spatial Data Models and Management

This unit develops core GIS skills in data models, coordinate systems, raster processing, and attribute/spatial data manipulation. Students learn to manage and transform vector and raster datasets, set geodesy and projection parameters, perform selections and joins, and organize maps and project files in preparation for advanced spatial analysis.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze and compare vector and raster data models (including floating‑point rasters), and select appropriate storage and processing settings for specific spatial tasks, including converting features to rasters
• Apply geodesy, coordinate system, and projection principles to locate features by latitude/longitude, define projected coordinate systems, and configure map scale and raster environments
• Demonstrate methods to derive and refine feature classes by performing attribute queries, selections, table joins, and polygon spatial joins (intersect, identity, and extraction)
• Evaluate map organization and data management workflows by loading imagery, labeling and symbolizing layers, using toolbars/status indicators, saving/restoring map documents, and documenting precision, accuracy, and basic statistical summaries
