This unit develops intermediate skills in multispectral image enhancement, band-combination, classification, georeferencing, DEM generation, and applied GIS modelling for thematic mapping. Students build on foundational image concepts to produce co-registered image products and decision-support maps that prepare them for advanced remote sensing applications in the next unit.
Learning Objectives
- Analyze and apply spectral enhancement and band-combination techniques (IHS, de-correlation stretch, Brovey, PCA, contrast transforms, and spatial filtering) to generate optimally visualized multispectral image products.
- Apply unsupervised and supervised classification methods, including iterative clustering and selective PCA, and quantify classification performance using validation and accuracy assessment metrics.
- Demonstrate geospatial referencing and surface-generation procedures by performing polynomial image warping, automated GCP-based and pixel-wise co-registration, and InSAR-derived DEM/interferogram processing, reporting registration and error statistics.
- Evaluate GIS modelling and thematic-mapping workflows—incorporating datums/projections, map algebra, interpolation, visualization, and uncertainty—to produce decision-support products for mineral exploration, earthquake damage zoning, and water resource analysis.
