Foundations of Nursing Calculations & IV

This unit equips learners with core mathematical skills and foundational clinical knowledge required for safe medication dosing and introductory IV therapy. Students will master metric and fraction-based calculations, basic pharmacologic concepts, vital sign interpretation, infection control, venepuncture/ injection principles, and legal and safety considerations to prepare for supervised hands‑on IV practice in later units.

Learning Objectives

• Demonstrate accurate metric conversions, fraction and percentage manipulations, and mole/millimole calculations to compute drug dosages and solution concentrations with minimal error
• Apply medication safety principles, including dose verification, labeling, and relevant legal/ethical requirements, to develop correct oral and IV medication administration plans
• Analyze vital sign data, common adverse reactions, and basic blood type information to identify when modification of medication or IV therapy is required
• Demonstrate basic aseptic non‑touch technique, identify common IV access devices and injection types, and describe venepuncture and infection‑control practices in preparation for supervised clinical skills
