Sustainable Garment Care & Wardrobe

This unit teaches practical skills and decision-making for extending the life of clothing and footwear through care, repair, and intentional consumption. Students practice stain removal, basic hand-stitching, fabric-specific care, secondhand shopping and resale, and prepare personal strategies that balance style with sustainability, building on foundational design concepts and preparing for advanced sustainable sourcing and production.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze textile fiber content and care labels to classify at least five common fabric types and propose appropriate laundering, storage, and maintenance methods for each
• Apply stain-removal procedures, basic hand-stitching repairs, sneaker cleaning, and leather-care techniques to successfully restore at least three garments and one pair of shoes according to safety and sustainability guidelines
• Demonstrate sustainable wardrobe management by creating an 8–12 item capsule wardrobe plan, using outfit formulas to produce five cohesive looks, and completing one intentional thrift-store purchase and one resale listing
• Evaluate personal consumption choices and environmental impacts by developing a written action plan with at least three measurable goals to reduce fashion waste and extend garment lifespan, and articulate strategies to avoid eco-anxiety while participating in solutions
