This unit introduces foundational AI concepts, the historical and technological drivers behind today’s capabilities, and common AI workflows. Students practice communicating technical ideas and evaluating real-world AI-for-good case studies to prepare for deeper technical and design work in subsequent units.
Learning Objectives
- Analyze core definitions and categories of artificial intelligence (e.g., rule-based, machine learning, narrow vs. general AI) and produce a written summary that differentiates them with examples
- Evaluate historical, technological, and societal factors that enabled recent advances in AI and prioritize three drivers in a short analytical essay
- Demonstrate understanding of common AI processes (data collection, preprocessing, model training, evaluation, deployment, monitoring) by creating a labeled workflow diagram and explaining the purpose and risks of each step
- Apply executive-summary and communication techniques to produce a one-page executive summary and 3-minute stakeholder briefing for an AI-for-good case study (e.g., disaster response or conservation), including a brief assessment of benefits, limitations, and ethical considerations
