Smart Cities Futures and Implementation

This unit synthesizes global trends, regional case studies, and implementation challenges to prepare students to plan and communicate real-world smart city solutions. Students will evaluate governance, privacy/security, mobility, healthcare, workforce, and delivery systems to create actionable, long‑term roadmaps for urban data systems and stakeholder engagement.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze regional case studies (Middle East, North America, South America) to identify and compare at least three distinct smart city priorities, constraints, and culturally informed implementation considerations for each region
• Evaluate program vision, governance, and stakeholder engagement approaches to identify causes of short-term thinking or unclear direction and recommend at least three evidence-based strategies to improve long-term program success
• Apply security and privacy best practices to assess risks in urban data systems and create a mitigation plan that balances data utility with privacy, including at least two technical and two policy controls
• Demonstrate the ability to synthesize trends in mobility, healthcare delivery, logistics, and workforce evolution into a concise implementation roadmap and present the roadmap to diverse stakeholders with clear success metrics
