Foundations of Medical Terminology

This unit introduces the structure, origins, and rules of medical terminology, including roots, combining forms, prefixes, suffixes, pronunciation, spelling, pluralization, and common abbreviations. Learners apply these fundamentals to identify and describe major body systems and prepare to use terminology accurately in clinical contexts in subsequent units.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze medical terms by breaking them into roots, combining forms, prefixes, and suffixes and explain their meanings and origins with at least 80% accuracy on formative assessments
• Apply rules for constructing, pluralizing, and expanding medical terms and common abbreviations to correctly form and interpret terminology in classroom clinical scenarios
• Demonstrate correct pronunciation and conventional spelling of common prefixes, suffixes, root words, and high-frequency system-specific terms through oral and written activities
• Evaluate sample clinical documentation for appropriate and potentially ambiguous use of medical abbreviations, acronyms, and terminology, and recommend corrections or clarifications
