This capstone unit examines complex, real-world ethical issues in modern healthcare including research involving special populations, stem cell and genetic research, ten priority patient-facing ethical concerns, landmark cases, and emerging future challenges. Students synthesize prior learning to analyze cases, communicate ethical reasoning to patients and colleagues, and propose practice or policy responses to new technologies and dilemmas.
Learning Objectives
- Analyze ethical principles, regulatory protections, and informed-consent requirements applicable to research with special and vulnerable populations, citing relevant oversight mechanisms
- Evaluate ethical arguments for and against stem cell and genetic research and apply ethical frameworks to assess risk/benefit and justice considerations in specific research scenarios
- Apply patient-centered ethical decision-making to at least ten common clinical issues and high-profile cases by prioritizing autonomy, beneficence, nonmaleficence, and justice in communications and care plans
- Demonstrate foresight by assessing emerging ethical challenges (e.g., gene editing, AI, data privacy) and proposing evidence-based policy or practice recommendations for ethically responsible future care
