Risk, Compliance, and Financial Strategy

This capstone unit integrates budgeting, internal controls, tax and compliance, financing, and exit planning to prepare students to manage the full financial lifecycle of a small business. Learners will apply practical control and reporting tools, evaluate financing and legal choices, and practice ethical financial decision-making to stabilize capital and support growth or an orderly exit.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze budgets, cash-flow forecasts, and cost-change drivers to identify liquidity risks, recommend adjustments to improve profitability, and distinguish productivity gains from harmful quality cuts
• Apply internal control principles and audit procedures to design, document, and test control activities (including segregation of duties, logistics controls, and KISS improvements) tailored to a small business
• Evaluate financing options, legal-entity structures, payroll/insurance implications, and tax exposures (including hidden taxes and other business taxes) to recommend compliant strategies for stabilizing capital, acquisitions, or exit
• Demonstrate professional and ethical financial management by preparing accurate tax and financial reports, detecting and preventing financial misrepresentation, and communicating compliance and control findings clearly to stakeholders
